Welcome to the Friends of Gramicci project!

Welcome to the Friends of Gramicci project! We're delighted to introduce Chris and Kendall from Concrete Skate Supply in Bondi. Their mutual love for skateboarding and community spirit has led them to create a distinctive skate shop that marries skate culture with fashion. They’re here to share their experiences, insights, and how Gramicci’s gear fits seamlessly into their dynamic lifestyle. Let’s dive into their journey!

Can you introduce yourself and share a bit about your background? How did you first get into skateboarding, and what drew you to the sport?

Chris: Skateboarding has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—a passion of mine that’s carried me through every stage of my journey. I’ve always believed in its power to bring people together and unite people from all walks of life. Before the pandemic hit, around 2019, I was coaching both kids and adults at the Bondi Beach bowl. At that time, there was a noticeable gap in the area—a lack of a local skate shop and a space for people to connect with the community. What was missing was a hub where people could come together, create lasting memories, get expert advice on the right gear, and shop for the best street and skate brands from around the world.

Kendall: I came on board when COVID hit. As skateboarding surged in popularity as a “solo” activity, lessons were becoming more in demand, and the idea of opening a shop was finally starting to take shape. With my background in digital design and fashion it was a perfect world collide moment. Teaming up with Chris to bring the Concrete vision to life was a no-brainer. The journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster—from slinging ‘takeaway’ boards out of a window during the early days of COVID to hosting exciting activations and collaborations during peak summer. Through it all, we’re incredibly grateful for the strong community we’ve built and the amazing support we continue to receive.

Running a business together comes with challenges and rewards. How do your personal styles and interests influence the brands and products you stock at Concrete Skate Supply?

Chris: Growing up on a skateboard, I've always been influenced by the brands and styles backed by my favourite skaters. Over the years, my connection with these brands has always been rooted in the content they created with their riders—the way it made me feel and the unmistakable style they embodied. Opening Concrete, I already had a list of core brands I wanted to represent simply because of my existing connection with them and wanting to have the most premium quality available to our customers.

Kendall: I’ll admit, growing up by the beach, surfing was my first love, but I’ve always been aware of skateboarding’s profound influence on streetwear fashion and the timeless characters that have transcended the sport. Skateboarding has always felt like something everyone can appreciate, from its origins in 1970s LA—when surfers took to the streets during flat days—to its ever-evolving expression of culture, personality, and creativity today. I bring a unique perspective to the shop, with a vision to expand beyond just skateboarding to include the broader culture—music, art, streetwear, and of course, skateboarding. I’m continuously inspired by global trends, travel, and brands that push boundaries. Chris and I are the same age and share the same mindset as many of our customers, and we’re finally at a point in our business where that influence is beginning to shine through in the inclusive streetwear brands we carry. We’re blending skate culture and fashion in everything we do. It’s been a journey, but we’re excited to see this year as the one where both of our backgrounds are truly reflected in the store through the brands we stock.

Bondi has such a unique vibe, with its mix of beach culture, a local community, and an iconic skatepark with its bowl. How has this influenced your connection to skateboarding, and how does it shape your daily routine?

Chris: I actually grew up in Melbourne and I first came to Bondi on a skate trip. I fell in love with the beach lifestyle and loved the mix of the laid-back vibe and the skate culture. Now, working here, it feels like the perfect environment to be inspired, to run the business, and to be part of a community that values both fun and adventure. The iconic skatepark and bowl are always nearby, reminding me of the connection between skateboarding and the local culture here.

Kendall: We feel incredibly lucky to run our business just a stone’s throw from Bondi Beach. Whether it’s locals or travellers passing by, it’s always great to meet new faces and catch up with familiar ones. The casual chats and friendly encounters really help keep the positive energy flowing throughout the day. Before diving into work, I love getting outside for a surf or a quick dip in the ocean, grabbing a coffee, and soaking in the scenery. It’s the perfect way to reset and get in the right headspace for the day ahead.

Gramicci has a long history of being all about movement and outdoor adventure. What drew you to the brand, and how do you think it fits with the skater lifestyle?

Kendall: What drew me to Gramicci is how versatile and practical the brand is for anyone who loves outdoor adventure. It’s a brand for everyone all about freedom, fun, and embracing whatever activity you’re into. Whether you’re skating, hiking, just out enjoying the day out, Gramicci gear is built for movement and durability. The quality of the products is premium, and speaks to our customers who are outside and live an active lifestyle, no matter what adventure they’re going on.

Chris: For me, Gramicci stands out because of the quality and the variety of fits it offers. The loose, light fabrics are perfect for skateboarding—comfortable and easy to wear, allowing for full range of motion. You can step off the board, and the gear still works seamlessly for everyday activities and different occasions. It’s a brand that really understands the needs of people who love movement, whether you're skating, exploring, or just living your day-to-day.

When you’re not skateboarding, how does Gramicci fit into your day-to-day life in Bondi? Is there a piece that you find yourself reaching for more often?

Chris: When I'm not skateboarding, I love the Gramicci Shell Packable Shorts in Black. They’re perfect for anything—swimming, skating, or even running. But I also find myself reaching for the Gramicci Wide Pant most days at the store. They’re lightweight, roomy, and super comfortable, making them ideal for all-day wear.

Kendall:The Nylon Gramicci Cap is hands down my most worn Gramicci piece when I’m out and about. It’s been the perfect go-to accessory for outdoor adventures, especially throughout the summer.

For someone new to Gramicci and looking for something that works both on and off the board, what would you recommend as a first piece? Anything that’s perfect for a skater’s lifestyle but still comfortable for everyday wear?

Chris: For newcomers, the Gramicci Pant is an easy choice. If you’re after a baggy fit the Gramicci Wide Pant or Gadget Pant, are super comfortable and versatile—great for both skating and everyday wear.

Kendall: The garment-dyed colours in those styles are great!
