Friends of Gramicci: Meet Photographer Sarah Rawson

Brisbane-based photographer and visual artist Sarah has a knack for turning everyday moments into striking visuals. With a background in photography, digital collaging, styling, and graphic design, she brings a playful, instinctive approach to storytelling that feels both effortless and intentional. We caught up with Sarah to hear about her creative journey, the friends who inspire her work, and the ideas behind this Gramicci shoot captured on a sun-soaked hike up Mount Cordeaux.

Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself — your background and what you do?

Hi Gramicci! I’m Sarah — though most people call me Sez — and I’m a Brisbane-based creative with a focus on photography, digital collaging, and styling. I’ve had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. It started with taking photos of my family, then evolved into shooting “Tumblr” style images with friends, and eventually led to creating content for brands like Gramicci. I’m a self-taught photographer, but I’ve also gained a lot of experience working as an e-commerce and content photographer for several fashion retailers. I studied Graphic Design at college, which I loved, and that creative foundation now influences the way I approach visual storytelling and digital collaging in my personal projects. !

What do you enjoy most about your work as a photographer, and what kind of projects or subjects inspire you?

What I enjoy most about being a photographer is the connection — both with the people I work with and the stories we create together. Shooting in a professional setting is always a highlight, especially collaborating with other creatives like stylists, makeup artists, models, and creative directors. It’s inspiring to share ideas, learn from one another, and see how everyone’s vision comes together on set. The other side of my photography is much more personal and collaborative. I love shooting with friends and fellow creatives, bouncing ideas around, and building concepts together just to see what we can make. Those shoots often feel the most free and experimental. Lately, I’ve been diving into film photography — using both a point-and-shoot and a manual Canon. I love the unpredictability and the hands-on nature of it; you’re really trusting your instincts and your eye. When the photos turn out just as you imagined, it’s such a rewarding, accomplished feeling.

Tell us a bit about your team — how do you usually collaborate on shoots or creative ideas?

Most of my collaborative photoshoots are with friends. I’m really lucky to be part of a close-knit group of incredibly talented creatives — two of whom are actually featured in this shoot. We all bring something different to the table, and that mix of ideas keeps things fresh. We’re constantly inspiring, challenging, and supporting one another, which makes every project feel like an adventure in itself. A lot of our shoots start with a simple idea — maybe something a friend wants to explore — and I’ll help shape it through mood-boarding, creative direction, and styling. When I plan my own projects, I tend to dream big and let the concept evolve naturally. It’s a process that reminds me why I love creating — the freedom to explore new ideas, experiment, and bring them to life with people who share that same energy.

How did you first come across Gramicci, and what were your first impressions of the brand?

I first came across Gramicci a few years ago while working in a streetwear store. I’d heard of the brand before, but that experience gave me a much deeper understanding of Gramicci's story, functionality, and attention to detail. Working closely with the garments really highlighted how considered the design is — everything feels purpose-driven yet effortless. When I began shooting with Gramicci pieces, what stood out to me most was the comfort and lightness of the fabrics, and the versatility of the accessories. As a creative, I’ve always seen Gramicci as a brand that represents community, movement, and playfulness — values that feel easy to connect with and interpret through imagery.

How would you describe your personal style, and what pieces do you usually reach for day to day? Any Gramicci favourites you’d recommend?

I’d describe my personal style as oversized, comfortable, and street-inspired. Day to day, I usually reach for relaxed silhouettes — big skirts layered over pants, paired with a tee. I grew up skateboarding and was heavily influenced by late ’90s and early 2000s hip-hop and R&B, so I’ve always gravitated toward more “masculine” fits that feel easy and expressive. The Nylon Balloon Pant featured in this shoot has to be one of the comfiest pairs I’ve ever worn. We hiked for three hours in 30+ degree heat, and I was honestly surprised by how lightweight and breathable they were — the fabric moved so easily, it didn’t feel restrictive at all. I’ve also always loved Gramicci’s longer skirts; they’re effortless to wear, come in a variety of fabrics, and feel really adaptable to different styles. And of course, the bags are a go-to — the Nylon Packable Tote is super lightweight and practical for everyday life.

What does a typical day look like for you when you’re not shooting — any favourite ways to unwind or explore outdoors?

When I’m not shooting, I’m usually editing — it feels like the creative process never really stops (haha). Outside of that, I love unwinding by gardening. We’ve got a huge yard at home, so there’s always something that needs tending to, but I find it really grounding. I also love spending time near the water — going to the beach or exploring rainforest areas always brings me a sense of calm. Queensland has some of the most beautiful natural spots, and I feel really lucky to have so many places to escape to and recharge whenever I need a break.

What makes this Gramicci shoot special to you, or how do you see it fitting into your creative journey?

This shoot was really special to me because it gave me the chance to highlight my friends and our shared journey as creatives. We constantly inspire and support each other, so when I brought the idea forward, everyone was instantly on board and full of motivation. It felt like a genuine celebration of our connection and creativity. Shooting outdoors is something I’m always drawn to — I love working with natural light and using flash to create bright, vivid images. For this project, we hiked up Mount Cordeaux just outside of Brisbane, and the view was absolutely breathtaking. Being able to combine something so fulfilling — exploring the outdoors with friends — while capturing the essence of Gramicci was honestly such a joy and we hope everyone loves the images as much as we do!
